Here are the first steps to take to make the theft guarantee of your multi-risk home insurance work.
File a complaint with the police station or gendarmerie
After the discovery of the disaster, file a complaint with the police station or gendarmerie within a maximum of 24 or 48 hours. Remember to ask for at least two copies of your complaint. One can be sent to your insurer with the written declaration of theft; and the other can be shipped, if necessary, to your landlord's insurer if you are a tenant.
Report the theft to your insurer
Within two days, by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt, you must declare the theft or attempted theft to your insurer (Article L 113-2, paragraph 4 of the Insurance Code). Know that it is the date of sending the letter that counts. In it, do not forget to mention: your contract number, your contact details, those of any witnesses or other victims of the burglary and the date on which you discovered the loss.
Make an estimate of your losses
In order for the insurer to calculate your compensation, list the missing or damaged items and indicate the year of purchase and their value. Ideally, provide your insurer with all the evidence that can support the fact that you own these objects or attest to their value: invoice, certificate of purchase, guarantee certificate, notarial deed, photo ...
