Indoor air quality

Our accommodation is the place where we spend the most time, on average sixteen hours a day. That is why it is important to pay attention to indoor air quality (IAQ), which helps to protect against harmful effects on our health, but this notion is still unclear ... We therefore propose in this article to learn more about the indoor air quality of your home and the means implemented to improve it.

What is indoor air quality?

The air you breathe in your home is not always of good quality. You inhale it every day, and it can cause many health concerns, as it is altered by different factors.
Coming from the outside, it is mainly pollutants that affect air quality, but your interior lists a large number of factors that can degrade the air you breathe:
  • Combustion appliances
  • Building materials
  • Decoration products
  • Furniture
  • Human activity (smoking, cleaning products, DIY, cooking...)
  • Pets
This poor indoor air quality, linked to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), has a direct impact on your health. You may experience significant symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, irritation, dizziness or respiratory allergies, etc. It is therefore necessary to measure the quality of indoor air, to know if it needs to be improved.

How to improve the indoor air quality of the home?

Today, this poor air quality costs France €19 billion a year, which represents a colossal budget.
It is necessary to make improvements to your interior, in order to reduce the risk of moderate to serious medical problems, and to enjoy your home with confidence. We give you some tips.

An official platform
The Ministry of the Environment has set up a platform to know if the indoor air quality in your home is good. " A good air at home " is presented in the form of a questionnaire, where you fill in the information about your interior. This questionnaire includes different categories:
  • Ventilation, humidity and heating
  • Household
  • Kitchen and bathroom
  • Atmosphere
  • Decoration, DIY & furnishing
  • Animal and plant
  • External contributions

A national campaign
In November 2020, the Indoor Air Quality Observatory (OQAI) launched its 2nd national Housing campaign, aimed at knowing the evolution of air quality following their first campaign of 2003-2005. During this measurement campaign, which ends in December 2022, 150 pollutants, endocrine disruptors and pesticides will be measured on a representative sample of French housing chosen by lot. For this, many connected sensors have been installed in these homes, and the panel will have to fill out many questionnaires.
This national campaign was funded in part by the Ministries of Health, Housing, and the Environment, ADEME and Public Health France. It should provide insight into our exposure to these harmful factors in our daily homes, and the results will be published in 2023.
During the first campaign conducted by the OQAI, 80% of the occupants surveyed were satisfied with the overall comfort of their home (thermal, olfactory, visual, sound and air quality). It is also noted that the results are satisfactory for energy-efficient housing.
An improvement in the interior of your home

Know that you can also improve the quality of your indoor air by choosing better materials for your home, whether in decoration or DIY. Invest in furniture with fewer pollutants, for example. You can also improve the ventilation conditions of your home, by installing a VMC.
To limit indoor air pollution, we also advise you to maintain your appliances and better choose your cleaning products, by taking an interest in the list of components, and by favoring natural or certified organic products. It is also important, to have the right gestures and to apply good practices of energy consumption at home and in condominiums.
